MESH games are built by stitching together random clips from two teams (known as MESH teams) against a wide array of their respective opponents.
Clips may represent American football drives, baseball innings, or periods of game-time in basketball. Other sports are similar.
Total Score = Direct + Crossover scores
Offensive points scored in a clip by a MESH team are, of course, awarded to that team. This is called DIRECT SCORING. In the first graphic below, ISU is awarded 16 direct points (6+10) for clips 1 and 3. UNI is awarded 20 direct points (9+11) for clips 2 and 4.
What if teams play bad defense? Direct Scoring ignores defense. So CROSSOVER scoring was invented to account for points scored AGAINST a MESH team.
Points scored against MESH team A are awarded to MESH team B.
Advantages:
1. Awards great defense
2. Fans can root for the defense when not seeing their team
ISU gave up 19 points (8+11) in clips 1 & 3 so:
UNI gets 19 crossover points
UNI gave up 21 points (7+14) in clips 2 & 4 so:
ISU gets 21 crossover points
